Nailing the Agency Interview: What Agents Really Look For

Insider advice on standing out in your agency interview - directly from an agency director.

With more than three decades in the industry – and pinch-me moments like sitting alongside Peter Lindbergh in the South of France while one of her models graced the cover of Italian Vogue – Terri Camberlango, Owner and Director of The Agency Arizona, knows exactly what it takes to stand out. I asked Terri to share what agents really look for when meeting new talent and how to make a lasting impression in your first agency interview.

The do’s, don’ts, and insider tips are all here.

Q: What should they wear—and what should they avoid?

Terri: Keep it clean and simple, it’s about showcasing you. Individualism can shine through, but you don’t want clothing to distract from your presence.

Q: What’s a green flag you look for during an interview?

Terri: Authenticity and professionalism.

Q: What’s a red flag that makes you instantly hesitant to sign someone?

Terri: When someone speaks negatively about brands, other talent, or agencies.

Q: Does personality weigh as much as looks or skill?

Terri: Absolutely. Looks and skill may land you bookings, but personality is what brings repeat bookings.

Q: How important is social media presence when considering new talent?

Terri: For our influencer board, it’s pretty important (ha!). For other divisions, we mostly want talent to be mindful of what they’re putting out there and to make sure it is in line with their marketing while also feeling true to them.

Q: If talent isn’t signed right away, how long should they wait before resubmitting?

Terri: We typically recommend waiting 6 months to a year. Market demands and client needs can change during that time. If we don’t pick up a talent, we also encourage them to explore other reputable agencies.

Q: In 2026, what new skills or qualities are agencies paying more attention to than before?

Terri: Agencies are placing more value on natural beauty, personality, and genuine connectivity. In such a competitive industry, being grounded, confident, and kind really sets you apart. Be the best, most authentic version of yourself.

Q: What’s one thing that instantly makes talent stand out?

Terri: Authenticity.

The Takeaway

If there’s one takeaway from Terri’s insight, it’s that authenticity paired with professionalism will always set you apart. Talent may open the door, but attitude and professionalism are what make agents remember you.
